The Staunton-based News Leader endorsed Kai Degner in his race against 24-year incumbent Bob Goodlatte in Virginia’s 6th congressional district. The News Leader editorial board interviewed both Degner and Goodlatte, and those interviews and the full endorsement on their website.
In the endorsement, the News Leader writes,
Degner is authentic and realistic. He gets voter frustration, but his tone is not angry. Since 2003, he has facilitated more than 200 community discussions. His stance on environmental and equality issues is to the left of most Shenandoah Valley voters’, but he understands that hyper-partisanship does not solve problems or lead to progress.
In fact, he said he wouldn’t want to serve on a legislative body full of people who only think as he does. He welcomes differences in philosophy and wants all voices to be heard and both parties to work together, because only then can America be its best.
Because of the kind of Washington we want — functional, efficient, principled, optimistic and open — our endorsement goes to Kai Degner. Congress needs more inquisitive problem-solvers like him. The 6th District would be fortunate to have his representation in Washington.
